So another one is over. What did we learn? Either not much or nothing really. The swing was all over the place with 2.5% to ALP in some seats and the exact opposite in others. It looks like Scott Morrison will be returned as Prime Minister. This is an incredible achievement for someone who was a political nobody 5 years ago and has been very unpopular even since becoming PM. I think he demonstrates a fundamental problem within the Liberal Party - anyone who is conservative enough to satisfy the parliamentary Libs is too unpopular with the electorate to keep them in power.
In a week where former PM Bob Hawke died, I am reminded of the words of his longtime sidekick Paul Keating, who won the "unwinnable election" in 1993. Was this Bill Shorten's unloseable election? Polls showed ALP with a 51-49 lead coming into the poll but the margin of error was 2.8%. The ALP appears to have lost 5 seats although some were extremely marginal - less than 1% at the last election.
