Is is really as easy as you make out - I've been thinking of doing one too - the big challenge as you have pointed out is attracting members - I wouldn't be doing sport ! - it's been done to death!! ha ha

There's quite a range of options. It depends what you want to do. I like the forum format because it allows anyone to start any topic they like whenever they want and it's a convenient way to organise all the material. If you choose a blog site, you have to start all the topics yourself and you have to go to various different sites to get extras, like an index of topics or a comments facility.
Pro Boards forums (like this one) are popular because they are free and you don't need to have your own website to host them. The down side is that some of the features on here are years behind some other forum software types.
Attracting numbers isn't really that hard. It's all a matter of how hard you promote the site. You need to also have Facebook and Twitter sites to promote your forum but that means you also have to spend a lot of time on them. You also have to go to every relevant site you can think of and plug your site, which I haven't bothered doing. This forum has a FB page but I haven't used it. I don't even include a link to this forum on any of my other internet sites or in my signature when I post on other forums.
I only chose RL as the theme because my favourite RL site at the time - the old BBC forum - was closing down. I could try to build it up but currently I have other loose internet communities, like RL forums and YouTube comments, where I can say most of what I want to say. Half the threads I've posted on here in the last 2 years are just posts I've made somewhere else then copy/pasted to here.
What would be the main topic of your site?

blogger.com is a site you can use. If you want a forum there you have to frig around and import one to your page
wordpress.com is another, very popular.
YouTube is very easy to use, especially if you'd rather talk than write. You can get free video editors if you wanna get fancy or you can just talk into you phonecam
Minds.com is free. You can use text pages with inbuilt comments section or video.

well I'm a bit sick of all the usual stuff - you know cooking;gardening; hobbies etc etc - maybe good for the masses but I'm more particularly these days. So I'm more for a specific crazy site - a sort of monty python style - just crazy humor really with a loose control on blasphemy!
