I don't have any children and I have learnt that I should never, ever, ever express any opinion on the parenting abilities of others because they will immediately reply, "How many kids have you got?" Apparently, among incompetent, delinquent and negligent parents, this line trumps everything - including logic. Apparently there is an unassailable level of intelligence which passes, seemingly by osmosis, from a fetus to the parent which allows them to have superior knowledge of everything over non-parents. I've never understood how this intelligence manages to transmit from the fetus to the father but apparently it does. As an example. take this typical parent/non-parent conversation: Me: Your kid probably shouldn't play with that barrel of sulphuric acid Parent: You don't even have kids, what the fuck would you know? So, rather than criticise the child-rearing skills of others I will refrain and, instead, just post news items as I find them. Couple whose son died in squalor have their case adjourned after mother collapses in dockA Melbourne couple whose five-year-old child died in their squalid home have had their plea hearing delayed after the child's mother passed out in the dock. The couple pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering their children and are awaiting sentencing by the Victorian County Court. Extra security guards were called to the courtroom, after there was a heavy thump as she hit the floor before her husband called out for help. Throughout the brief hearing the woman, aged in her 40s, sobbed loudly and hyperventilated in the dock. The case has been stood down, after the woman was taken to hospital and a psychiatric report ordered. When the judge queried if she may have deliberately taken anything to bring on her condition, her lawyer told the court her collapse was unusual. The couple have a second young child and are unable to be identified. Couple's son died in squalid house The court heard the couple's son had cut his toe in the days before his death. Prosecutors described the house where they lived as "covered in squalor" and said all the floors were covered with rubbish, including rotten food, open cat food tins and faeces. They said the walls of the property were also "covered in filth". But the court heard the couple was unable to be charged with the more serious charge of reckless conduct endangering life, because although their son had died, there was no evidence directly linking the cause of death to their actions. The woman and her husband, also aged in his 40s, pleaded guilty to three offences, including two charges of recklessly engaging in conduct of failing to provide a safe domestic environment between 2010 and 2012, that placed each of their children in danger of serious injury. They also pleaded guilty to one charge of failing to lodge a birth registration for their dead child. The court heard the boy was born at home, in Melbourne's west. "Obviously I'm guilty," the child's mother said when she was asked how she pleaded to that offence. When her husband also pleaded guilty, she said, "but it wasn't your fault". The woman told the court she was a "deadbeat" when asked of her occupation. Her husband said he was unemployed. www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-31/mother-collapses-as-court-hears-her-son-died-in-squalor/5638090

Father who left daughter, 3, in burning car sentenced to seven years in jailBy Joanna Menagh A father who left his three-year-old daughter in a crashed, burning car has been sentenced to seven and a half years in jail. The Perth judge who sentenced Bevan Stanley Cameron, 25, said his behaviour "defied description", it was so out of the ordinary. In April this year, Cameron went to the home of his ex-partner's mother in Ellenbrook, in Perth's north-east, bashed the ex-partner's 16-year-old sister with a baseball bat, took his three-year-old daughter and stole a car. During a police pursuit, he crashed the car on the Great Eastern Highway in Midland. Cameron's daughter was injured in the crash but he fled the scene. The girl was pulled to safety by police as the car burst into flames and was later treated in hospital for a torn bladder and internal bleeding. Cameron was also injured in the crash and required hospital treatment. He pleaded guilty in July to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, failing to ensure the victim of a crash received assistance and stealing a car. A man charged after allegedly leaving a child after a car accident is wheeled into hospital this morning. Photo: Bevan Cameron and his daughter were injured when he crashed during a police pursuit. (ABC News) During today's sentencing hearing, Cameron's lawyer, John Hawkins, said it was difficult to explain his client's behaviour, which he described as "like something out of a Hollywood horror movie". The court heard Cameron claimed to have no memory of what he did, because he had consumed a one-litre bottle of rum. He recorded a blood alcohol level 0.086, which Judge Gillian Braddock noted was not exceedingly high, given Cameron claimed he was "out of it" and had no recollection of the night. Judge Braddock described Cameron's behaviour as "extreme" and "so far out of the ordinary it defied description". "It illustrates Mr Cameron was completely out of control," she said. "It wouldn't have mattered who got in his way." Mr Hawkins said his client had been in and out of jail since he was 19, and had been out of prison for only three months when he committed the offences. www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-07/perth-father-who-left-toddler-in-burning-car-jailed/5875670

Mother of baby abandoned in drain near Sydney's M7 tracked down by police
The mother of a newborn baby boy left inside a drain near Sydney's M7 motorway has been found.
The baby's cries alerted cyclists who were riding alongside the motorway at Quaker's Hill in Sydney's west this morning.
He was rescued and police said it appeared the baby had been abandoned and dropped 2.5 metres through an opening in the drain.
Inspector David Lagats said officers were horrified by the discovery.
"It was already undernourished and dehydration would have taken effect," Inspector Lagats said.
Police doubt the child would have survived in today's heat if he had not been found so early this morning.
They believed the baby was born in hospital and after checking hospital records and doorknocking the area, they identified the baby's mother as a 30-year-old Quakers Hill woman.
Police say the woman was taken to Blacktown Hospital after complaining of an illness during questioning.
The boy remains in a serious but stable condition at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Earlier, Family and Community Services district director for Western Sydney Lisa Charet said the parents must have been feeling desperate.
"Often when this sort of thing happens, people are in a place of desperation," she said.
"There has been cases where mothers have had postnatal depression or those issues or are very young and don't know where to go to for help. That's where we come in because we can provide help.
"We are really worried about primarily his welfare and mum's."

Charles Mihayo, who smothered daughters with pillow, gets life in prisonwww.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-18/charles-mihayo-gets-life-in-prison-for-murdering-daughters/5975792A Melbourne man who murdered his two young daughters by smothering them with pillows has been sentenced to life in jail. Charles Mihayo, 36, smothered his daughters Savannah, 4, and Indianna, 3, at his unit at Watsonia in April. He pleaded guilty to the killings in August and was today sentenced in the Supreme Court to a minimum of 31 years in jail. Prosecutors said Mihayo was locked in a bitter custodial dispute with his former wife at the time and had acted out of revenge. The court heard Mihayo sent a text message to his former wife shortly before he killed them suggesting she had "won", and he was giving up his rights to see the girls. He told her he wanted to see them "one last time" and when she took them to see him, he dressed the girls up in new dresses he had bought for them. He then filmed them dancing to music, before smothering them with pillows.

Cairns Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said the mother, who was found yesterday with chest and neck wounds, was lucid and awake and speaking with police. The bodies of eight children were found following what was believed to be a multiple stabbing on Friday morning. Four girls aged 14, 12, 11 and two, and four boys aged nine, eight, six and five were found in Murray Street, Manoora, where the 37-year-old woman was also located. Video: School friends of murdered children leave tributes; police examine knives (ABC News) Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor said charges would be laid when it was "appropriate and everything's completed". He said there were five fathers to the children, and police had been in contact with all five men. "Overnight we had the forensic people in the house. The deceased have been removed from the house," Detective Inspector Ansicar said. "Today we will have our coroner and pathologist conducting their investigations with the assistance of the family." www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-20/cairns-mother-of-children-arrested-for-murder/5980826

Boy kills mum with gun in purse www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/walmart-shooting-boy-kills-mum-with-gun-in-purse/story-fnixwvgh-1227170964963A TWO-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his mother at a Walmart store in Idaho after taking a gun from her purse. Police identified the victim as Veronica Rutledge of Blackfoot, Idaho. The shooting took place in the store in Hayden, Idaho, where she was shopping with her children and other family members. “Once on scene, deputies found a 29-year-old victim was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound,” Kootenai County Sheriff Ben Wolfinger said in a statement. “Her son was seated in the shopping cart and accessed the victim’s concealed weapon from her purse and discharged it, striking the victim,” he added, noting that the shooting appeared to be accidental. Rutledge, who was spending the holidays in the area, had a concealed weapons permit, the sheriff’s office confirmed. Sheriff’s lieutenant Stu Miller told local television KHQ that in “instances like this, you know I’m a big proponent of a concealed weapon for your own safety. However, you have to be responsible. Unfortunately, in this case, that just wasn’t,” Miller told the station. “A very sad incident occurred at our store today involving the death of a female customer,” the local Walmart said in a statement.

Nation's highest rate of fetal alcohol syndrome documented in WA's Fitzroy Valley One-in-eight children born in a group of remote communities in Western Australia's Kimberley region has fetal alcohol syndrome, a new study shows. The Lililwan Study was initiated by Aboriginal leaders who invited researchers and clinicians into the Fitzroy Valley community. The study title comes from a Kimberley Kriol word meaning "all the little ones". The survey of 108 babies born in the area between 2002 and 2003 found 13 were confirmed to have the disorder. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a lifelong condition which can affect babies born to women who drink alcohol during their pregnancy. The condition can lead to intellectual impairment, learning disabilities and behaviour problems. It is also characterised by abnormal facial features and poor growth, before or after birth. Report author Elizabeth Elliott said the figures were the first reliable numbers from a remote Australian community where high-risk alcohol use was common. "The prevalence rate we report for fetal alcohol syndrome, at 120 per 1,000 children aged seven to nine years, is the highest documented in Australia," Professor Elliott said.

Man who left hurt child in burning car dies after being found injured in Casuarina Prison
A man who was jailed for leaving his three-year-old daughter in a crashed and burning car has died in custody in Perth.
The Department of Corrective Services said Bevan Stanley Cameron, 26, died on November 2 after undergoing surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital for injuries sustained in his prison cell.
Cameron was found injured five days earlier at Casuarina Prison in Perth's southern suburbs.
An investigation is set to be carried out by WA Police on behalf of the coroner, however the death is not believed to be suspicious.
Cameron was sentenced last November to seven-and-a-half years in prison after crashing a stolen car on Great Eastern Highway in Midland and leaving his injured daughter inside.
The girl was pulled to safety by police as the car burst into flames and was later treated in hospital for a torn bladder and internal bleeding.

Bunbury teen who fatally bashed newborn son sentenced to 10 years' detentionwww.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-23/bunbury-teen-baby-death-sentencing/6340942A teenage boy has been sentenced to 10 years' detention for fatally bashing his newborn son at Bunbury Regional Hospital last year. The youth was 15 when he bashed the head of the 25-day-old boy against a doorframe or a wall in February last year. The youth had been left alone with the child in a room that had been set up to help him and the child's 16-year-old mother prepare for the baby's discharge from hospital. The baby suffered two fractures to his skull, and died nine days later in Princess Margaret Hospital. One medical expert described the baby's injuries as "the most severe head injuries" she had seen in an infant. The youth was originally charged with murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter. State prosecutor Matthew Walton said the youth had provided no explanation for what he had done, suggesting to some people it was an accident or that the nursing staff were responsible.

Adelaide mother escapes jail sentence after bashing eight-month-old daughter with a spoon

WARNING: Distressing content
AN Adelaide father has hit out at his former partner, who walked away from a jail term despite pleading guilty to bashing their eight-month-old daughter, Evie, with a spoon.
Lorien Norman, 26, faced a maximum sentence of 13 years behind bars for the aggravated assault — but is a free woman because the judge said the baby’s injuries were “likely to resolve”.
“I’m disgusted by the outcome,” Shane McMahon told news.com.au.
“I’m not being sexist, but if it was me I would be in jail. If I did this under the circumstances, I would still be incarcerated.
“I wouldn’t have a legal leg to stand on, and I wouldn’t expect it either.” The judge didn’t consider the offence serious enough for a jail term.

Last October, Miss Norman called police at 4am, threatening to throw Evie over the balcony of her unit.
When police arrived, they noticed significant bruising to Evie’s face and body. Both Miss Norman and her daughter were taken to hospital.
Court documents revealed Miss Norman initially “lied” to police, claiming Evie had taken a fall while at a play gym the day before.
But a paediatrician examination concluded that Evie had actually sustained “at least eight separate blows to her face and body” as a result of physical assault.
It is understood the judge, Jack Costello, didn’t consider Norman’s offence serious enough for a jail term.
“Whilst any assault of a child, particularly one of such a tender age and vulnerability, by a parent stands as a gross breach of trust, your offending is nevertheless far from the most serious of offending of this type in terms of the degree of force involved and the duration of the offending,” said Judge Costello told the court. Evie was found to have suffered at least eight separate blows to the face and body.

Miss Norman was instead given a good behaviour bond by the court and ordered to pay $500. The 26-year-old will be under the supervision of a community corrections officer, and complete any counselling, assessment or therapy programs deemed appropriate by the officer.
“This is a game to her,” Mr McMahon said, speaking of text messages he received in the days following Miss Norman’s sentence.
“I’m not in jail,” the text message from Miss Norman to Mr McMahon read. “What’s your next move?”
Before responding, Miss Norman sent another message saying she’d “made it” and would have “part custody within a year”, despite having everyone on social media against her. The text messages from Lorein Norman following her sentence.

Judge Costello said Ms Norman had a “troubled adolescence” with a history of self-mutilating behaviour. He said she’d also been diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder, and had been admitted to the Adelaide clinic on two occasions.
“You have also had a significant history of drug (particularly cannabis) and alcohol abuse,” he said.
“Despite your troubled and somewhat dissolute past life there is guarded cause for optimism in that you have taken steps to turn your life around.
“You are clearly remorseful for your actions.” Evie, while physically healed, gets upset when people go near her face.

Mr McMahon, whose photos of Evie’s injuries have gone viral, said his daughter is still suffering mentally from the ordeal.
“Physically she’s OK ... but mentally it’s too early to tell,” she said.
“But she’s well aware of what happened. She doesn’t like things near her face and will put her arms up. How will I have a hair dresser go near her face one day?”

Tyrell Cobb death: Mother Heidi Strbak jailed for toddler's manslaughter
Heidi Strbak has been sentenced to nine years in jail by the Supreme Court in Brisbane over the manslaughter of her four-year-old son Tyrell Cobb.
Last week, a Supreme Court judge found that Strbak inflicted the fatal blow or blows that killed her son on the Gold Coast in 2009.
Tyrell suffered blunt force trauma to his abdomen and died in hospital after he was found unconscious in Strbak's Biggera Waters home. Key points
Strbak inflicted blows that killed her son She cried in the dock while denying responsibility Detectives 'never gave up' in their pursuit for justice Strbak will be eligible for parole in four years
Court documents showed the injuries could have been caused by a blow from a fist, foot or blunt object.
Tyrell had also suffered 70 bruises and abrasions including a cigarette lighter burn on his ankle.
Strbak will have to serve four years in custody before being eligible for parole.
"You made a terrible error of judgement for not getting treatment for this sick boy," Justice Peter Applegarth said.
"[The] last hours of his life must have been miserable and painful."
Strbak cried and shook in the dock when the sentence hearing began this morning.
Just before the sentence was handed down, Strbak addressed the court.
"I loved him more than I could possibly describe," she said.
"When he was taken away from me, I lost my life as well.
"I have not caused the injuries that I have been blamed for. I believe it's a mistake." Heidi Strbak, mother of 4yo Tyrell Cobb who died from injuries Photo: A judge earlier found Tyrell Cobb's mother Heidi Strbak (R) delivered the fatal blow or blows. (ABC News: Kathy McLeish)
At the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Phil McCarthy told the court that Strbak had chosen to conceal the true condition of her son from family and doctors who might have been able to treat the boy.
He called for her to be jailed for at least nine years.
But defence barrister Greg Maguire told the court that before the weekend of Tyrell's death, Strbak was a relatively "good mum".
He told the court Strbak was experiencing "accumulated stress and frustration in days leading up to his death".
Police Inspector Damien Hansen addressed media after the sentencing.
"[Detectives] put together a compelling case against the accused, and that's resulted in this sentencing," he said.
"We were confident all along. It's been a thorough investigation. Those detectives never gave up in their pursuit for justice for Tyrell."
'You were Tyrell's mother'
Strbak's former partner Matthew Scown was also convicted of manslaughter, but walked free from court in October due to time already served in custody. Strbak pleaded guilty to manslaughter for failing to get him medical attention, but denied the police allegation that she inflicted the fatal blow to his stomach.
However, the Supreme Court disagreed, saying there was a "strong circumstantial case" against the mother.
The court heard evidence she was aggressive when not sedated by cannabis and that she had sought some that weekend, but did not get any.
Scown also testified against his former partner, with the court accepting his version of events that Strbak had struck Tyrell and refused to take him to hospital.
During the case, paediatric surgeon Roy Kimble said leading up to his death Tyrell would have been in extreme pain and have been very sick from the time of injury until death.
Despite being in "extreme pain" and requiring urgent treatment, Dr Kimble said Tyrell's injuries were treatable and he could have survived.
In sentencing, Justice Peter Applegarth said a good mother, or any reasonable person, would have sought medical treatment.
"If you'd taken him for emergency treatment you might have been investigated and possibly charged. But he would be alive, and you would not have been convicted of manslaughter.
"You were Tyrell's mother, with a primary duty for his care. You knew if Tyrell was taken to hospital, and the source of his injuries was investigated, you would be held responsible for his neglect."

Dallas man executed for killing daughters while mum listened A former Dallas accountant who shot his two young daughters dead while their mother listened helplessly on the phone has been put to death in Texas. John David Battaglia, 62, received a lethal injection for the May 2001 killings of his nine-year-old daughter, Faith, and her six-year-old sister Liberty. Battaglia and his wife had separated and the girls were killed at his Dallas apartment during a scheduled visit. Battaglia's execution was America's third this year, all in Texas. The punishment was carried out after the US Supreme Court rejected appeals from his lawyers to review his case, contending the 62-year-old was delusional and mentally incompetent for execution. His former wife, Mary Jean Pearl, witnessed the execution. In his last statement, Battaglia was quoted by prison officials as saying: "Well, Hi Mary Jean. See y'all later. Go ahead please." Mother heard daughters' screams as they were shot At the time of the shooting, Ms Pearl was seeking to have Battaglia arrested for violating a protective order by threatening her. According to court documents, shortly before Battaglia was scheduled to host his daughters for a regular dinner, a police officer informed him by phone he needed to surrender for violating his probation. The officer asked him to turn himself in so that police would not have to take him into custody while he was with his daughters, court documents showed. After the girls arrived at his apartment, he left a message on his wife's phone. When she called back, he put the phone on speaker and demanded that his wife speak with daughter Faith. The daughter then asked: "Mommy, why do you want Daddy to go to jail?" and could be heard a few seconds later saying: "No, Daddy, please don't, don't do it." Then the mother heard gunshots and screams. Battaglia shouted an obscenity at her on the phone, the documents showed. Ms Pearl called 911 and police found the dead girls in Battaglia's apartment. Both had been shot multiple times. After the shooting, Battaglia went to a bar with his girlfriend and was arrested shortly afterward at a tattoo parlour where he was getting rose tattoos to remember his dead daughters, the documents showed.

Generalizations are just that and should be read as such - there are always the nasty outliers that spoil the general rule. You did pic some very gross examples didn't you?
